Our Tournaments

Each year, we proudly host two tournaments on the APDA circuit: SwatNov in the fall and SwatSpring in the spring.

SwatNov

Held in September or October, SwatNov is our annual novice tournament and one of the friendliest entry points to competitive debate on the circuit. Specifically designed for first-time APDA debaters, SwatNov is a welcoming environment where students can gain confidence, practice their skills, and meet peers from across the region — many of whom are just beginning their debate journeys as well.

SwatSpring

Hosted in February or March, SwatSpring is open to both novice and varsity debaters and tends to attract a broad and competitive field. What makes the tournament especially exciting is the sense of reunion and growth. Many students who attended SwatNov as wide-eyed first-timers return to SwatSpring with new confidence, this time accompanied by their more experienced varsity teammates.

What sets our tournaments apart?

A Prime Location. Swarthmore is just 25 minutes from Philadelphia and within easy reach of New York City, Washington D.C., Baltimore, and New Jersey. Whether you're traveling by Amtrak, regional rail, bus, or car, getting here is easy — and once you arrive, you'll be greeted by one of the most beautiful campuses in the country.
Low Registration Fees. We believe debate should be accessible to every team, regardless of budget. That's why we keep our tournament registration fees low while maintaining a high standard of hospitality and organization.
Themed Experiences. Every SwatNov and SwatSpring has a unique theme that shapes the entire weekend. From Barbie and Chappell Roan to Paddington Bear and Sunrise on the Reaping, our themes appear in tournament branding and awards. In 2023, SwatNov champions walked away with pink cowboy hats. In 2025, SwatSpring winners received plush Paddington Bears (complete with tiny red bucket hats).
