The Amos J. Peaslee Debate Society is a fully student-run organization. Each December, team members who meet the eligibility criteria vote to elect a new Board to lead the team for the coming year. The Board consists of five members: the President, Vice President of Finance, Vice President of Communications, Vice President of Operations, and Member at Large.
Together, the Board is responsible for managing the team's operations, from tournament registration and budgeting to social events and community building. Whether it's coordinating travel to a debate across the country (and the globe) or welcoming new members at the start of the semester, the Board ensures Peaslee remains an inclusive space for all.
Coming in from Kazan, Russia, Yana is a senior studying Political Science and Computer Science (though she sometimes ends up taking more Philosophy classes than either). She is passionate about shaping technology policy and governance that foster innovation while proactively addressing the risks of emerging technologies. Yana began debating at Swarthmore and now specializes in American Parliamentary Debate. Her favorite debate memory is singing with everyone at last spring's post-banquet karaoke night.
Originating out of Denver, Colorado, Leo is a senior studying Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE). Having done debate in high school, he now specializes in British Parliamentary Debate and enjoys the novelty and strategy. A fun fact is that he is exactly 6 feet tall to the quarter inch. His favorite debate memory is exploring Berkeley, the Golden Gate Bridge, and bookstores in the Bay Area after a tournament.
Joining from Vancouver, Canada, Calvin is a junior studying Political Science and Statistics. His interests include international law and the transformation of intractable conflict through humanitarian peacekeeping. Before joining Swarthmore Debate, he competed for four years in the Canadian National Debate Format (CNDF). His favorite debate memory is seeing an excellent President Snow impersonation at SwatNov 2025 (Hunger Games themed).
Originally from Santa Clara, California, Charlotte is a junior studying History and Engineering. She began debating at Swarthmore her freshman year and now specializes in British Parliamentary debate. Her favorite topics to debate include philosophy and sports. Her favorite memory is going to see the Pittsburgh Penguins play after a tournament with the team.
Hailing from Seattle, Washington, Julia is a sophomore seeking to study Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE). They began debating at Swarthmore and currently specialize in American Parliamentary Debate. Their favorite debate memory is going on a feminism case winning streak at a tournament with Elijah, another member of Peaslee.
The strength of Peaslee today is built on the dedication and leadership of those who came before us. Year after year, past Boards have shaped the direction of the team — organizing tournaments, mentoring new members, and upholding the values that define who we are. We're proud to celebrate their contributions and carry their legacy forward.
